Help deciphering will from 1587
« on: Friday 11 January 19 13:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Not really thought of posting on this board before but any help deciphering the will of Adlard Locke would be greatly appreciated.

I can make out some but not all so hope someone out there can help.

Thanks in advance

In the name of god Amen The xijth daie of december

in the yere of o(ur) lord 1587 I Adlerd locke of dyke

in the p(ar)ishe of Borne make my last will in this

mann(er) followinge ffirst I give & bequethe to John [Colma(n)?]

iiijs It(e)m I give to Jane Colma(n) iiijs It(e)m I give and

bequethe to Thomas Huginge iiijs to John Lee iiijs

To Elizabeth Eston iiijs It(e)m I give and bequethe

to Isabell Lenton iiijli It(e)m I give and bequethe to

katherine pepp(er) xs
[crossed out] It(e)m I give

and bequethe to
[crossed out] John pepp(er) vjs viijd It(e)m I give

to Roger pepp(er) vjs viijd and to Elizabeth pepp(er) his wife

vjs viijd It(e)m I give and bequethe to my god children Adlard

Lednam Luce Tompson watters hastinges vjs viijd to ev(er)y...

ADDED:

Regarding the name pepp(er) - I have transcribed all four this way on the basis of Roger pepp(er)'s surname, which clearly begins with a p.

In some C16th hands the character which begins (for example) katherine's surname is read as an r.

So the case is strongest for pepp(er) but don't discount the small possibility of repp(er) for three of the four.

horselydown86 you are an absolute star, thank you very much for this start to the will of Adlard Lock. There are some names her I've never come across before and have to admit I struggled to read the original, can I be extremely cheeky and ask if there's anything you can do with the rest of the page for me, you can say no  :), I've stared at it for an eternity and still only pick out a few words.

Again many thanks for your help.

Best regards

quies looks like a plural form of quy, an alternative spelling of kye = cow. So, 2 cows.
