Hi, I'm hoping someone can help with my request or point me in the right direction. An ancestor of mine was Edward Lionel Hall who was killed on 27 March 1918. His CWG details are at https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1581917/hall,-edward-lionel/ and he served in the Royal Sussex Regiment.

I would be interested to know where the Royal Sussex Regiment would have been fighting in March 2018, and whether I would be able to find details relating to Edward Hall's death who was serving as a 2nd Lieutenant when he died.

Any details about my ancestor and the regiment would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes,
Jon.

He was serving with 9 Battalion R Sussex when he was killed.  The war diary for the battalion is downloadable for £3.50 from the National Archives,

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353326  (it is also on Ancestry if you have a sub).

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Had a quick first look.  There is a detailed account by the CO of the period up to 27th March vividly illustrating the action as the enemy continued to press their great offensive that had started on 21 March.  2 Lt Hall is mentioned a couple of times but, frustratingly, although understandably  I think,  the account does not record how he died.

In the diary for April is a typed list of casualties of the month before.  His name has been added in manuscript which may indicate that his fate was not immediately known (the account will illustrate why!) and his death thus confirmed only later.  He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Pozieres memorial.
