Burial in 1902 from Durham County Hospital
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 08:55 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone suggest where someone who died at Durham County Hospital in 1902 would be buried?  He had been transferred there from Durham Gaol.

Thanks
Sue

Durham city is ringed by cemeteries  Sue,one right across the road from the old County hospital site.I
suppose there religion would be a factor also was this person a local? A name would help.

His name was Samuel Horseman,  aged 50,and he was a prisoner from Newcastle.  He died 3 June  1902,  and it was suicide (so that may help with burial location). Ive no idea about religion, as I cant find his birth record, his marriage record, or his son's birth record.  He is an absolute mystery.  His son is the only Hors(e)man who died in WW1 whose ancestry I  cant trace.
What is the cemetery opposite the hospital called?

Hi Sue,yes looking at both spelling's there doesn't seem to be anyone fitting the bill birth wise
to be 50 in 1902,the Church opposite is St Cuthbert's church but I would imagine due to the sad
circumstances around his death he would have been released to his family and buried where he lived.
I'm not sure if you can edit and change the thread title but it would draw more attention using his name
and seeing what the good folk here can dig up  they really love a mystery!
 this caught my eye.

That is the correct family - who were living at Buckingham Street.  Isabella and Samuel jnr are still at Buckingham St in 1911, with her second husband,  but all called Ryle (indexed as Pyle).
In 1891 they are at Seaham st, with Samuel (snr) being 38 (1853), although wife is S Jane.
There are several newspaper cuttings about his death;  one saying he was from 'Buckham' [Buckingham] street,  and the other in a national paper saying that when in hospital he had said that he never wanted to meet his wife again.  so I doubt if the body was returned to N/cle, especially as the family did not appear well off.  In 1901 57 Buckingham St, showed them in 2 rooms,  and in 1911 they were in 1 room.

I'm hoping Isabella's second marriage certificate may give some clues.

There is one Samuel born in Newcastle, but its not the same family.

Also the service records for Samuel (jnr) appear to be in the 'burnt documents' so no longer exist.

Hi Sue,Samuel jr. is remembered on the following memorial in Elswick which might give a clue to his
father's placeof burial as Elswick is a huge Cemetery not far from where they lived if he was returned
to the parish for burial.

Good point - rather than paying in Durham for his burial - send him back to parish of origin and let them worry about it.  Alternatively he may have been buried at the prison.  I see they had a burial ground.  I'll email DRO and ask if they have any reference to prison burial records.

My thought's too Sue,sound's callous but it did happen,as far as I can see the prison burial ground was
for executed prisoner's and was last used in 1900,still worth contacting them there may have been a
designated churchyard or cemetery for prison death's.
