Anyone know how to research inquests and court records from the 1950s?
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 10:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi, have just received a death certificate that states.

Cause of death: magnesium poisoning and blood loss, conviction, the offence being manslaughter.

Informant: certificate on inquest adjourned and not received from Tempest Bouskell, deputy coroner for the city of Leicester. Inquest held 10th September 1958.

Don't want to post the personal details as it's quite recent! ( happy to pm them) But does anyone know how I can find out more?

Can't find any Leicester newspapers online for that period, I've emailed the records office asking if they hold inquest details or newspapers for that time. Apparently they will reply within 20 working days!!!

Thanks,

Kev

Maybe you just need to be patient  ;D

The British library should hold newspapers for the period.  Have you tried Leicester library  :-\

Ha ha, patience of a saint  ::) The Leicester daily mercury seems to stop in 1950 then return as the Leicester Mercury in 1960 so I can't find any info on Leicestershire papers from the 1950s to search for. I haven't tried the library but only because I'm pretty certain the records office has them.

I don't even know if you can view inquest reports from that period or are they closed?

In fact I know nothing   :o

I don't know if you can view inquest reports that recently either, possibly not. There should be something in the papers I would have thought.

Looking at the British library catalogue they apparently have

Leicester mercury.
1919 to date

Leicester Evening Mail.
1931 to 1963

Illustrated Chronicle.
1955 to 1969

I did not browse all of the pages

Quite often, murder or manslaughter cases are also reported in other locality papers. Maybe worth also checking The Times online. I can view via free my local library membership.

Did you try a British library newspaper search? You don’t need to subscribe for a basic search around the right dates.
