Joseph Short 19th century Canadian photo Date?
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 16:06 GMT (UK) »
The caption on this photo says the following (verbatim): Joseph Short's ancestors, from an 1837 tintype. (l. to r.) Mary Jeffrey Short (Joseph's mother); her husband's aunts Margaret and Euphemia; (centre, seated) John Jeffrey (Joseph Short's grandfather); Joseph's Aunt Mary Jeffrey; his grandmother Mary Lyall Jeffrey Short and her son-in-law John Short.
I'm not convinced, because tintypes were not commonly used until the mid-1850s, I believe. And the clothing style sure doesn't seem to line up with 1837.
Any thoughts on the date this photo might've been taken?

It looks more like early 1900s to me....definitely not as early 1837.

I agree. The issue is that the names on the caption are all names of people who lived in the mid-1800s, so the identities of these people are now in dispute. Can I ask what it is in the clothing that makes you think the photo is from the early 1900s? Thanks!

Agree with Carol.

I think the lady on the right seems to be wearing large puffed sleeves which are late 1890s fashion.

Sorry - Amended - -I think it is a shadow causing that look.
Still think Carol is on the money.

I don't think they were even using tintype photography in the 1830s, were they??  - as you suggest.

I suppose some of the people photographed could have been born anytime after about 1837.   :-\   They look about the right age don't they.

Just to clarify photography didn't arrive until 1839 with Daguerreotypes (copper). Tintypes arrived mid 1860's (iron).
As has been said this is neither of those. Although it's pretty much a black blob with heads some of the styles can just about be made out & I would agree with anyone who says this is late 1890's at the earliest & more probably Edwardian.
The lady with her hand on the old chap's shoulder I would suggest is his wife as she has her wedding ring finger extended which is a bit of an old fashioned pose displaying such.

The woman at left looks the youngest and you can tell from her hairstyle and blouse and skirt that it around 1900ish The older people will wear older style clothes and could be people born in 1837.
