Any central record of land sales in Westmeath prior to 1969?
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 16:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out when a land sale, probably around Ballinalack, took place. I know it was in the 1950s/1960s, and probably a small holding. The family surname was Kennedy. The active seller was Noel Kennedy. Is there a central register I could search?
Many thanks
Gerry

Is this the same Noel Kennedy Ballinalack who died suddenly in his early 50s in May 1969
if it is the land may not have been sold until the early 1970s.

Wow! It probably is. My interest is this: my grandmother was a Kennedy from Ballinalack. Her brother John died in 1933, but he had three sons and a daughter before that. I knew their names, Noel, Martin, Tommy and Peggy. However, I knew nothing else about them, except that Noel was present when his mother died in September 1957. I only found today that he had probably stayed around the Mullingar area, and remained single. But I had nothing else on him. I also heard today that he wrote to his brother in England to get permission to sell land. So, my rootschat question about land sales was to find out more about Noel. You have jumped to him immediately.
So, what can you tell me about Noel and his sudden death?
Many thanks for this
Gerry

I'm looking at newspapers.
Westmeath Examiner.
Sat May 24 1969 died the previous Sunday.
He didn't appear to have a wife so sounds good.
Very popular, largest funeral for some time.
Leney Church and Multyfarnham Cemetery.

I think that would be him. Many many thanks. I don't have a subscription to the Examiner online, but I can go into the Central Library and look at archives now. Your help is much appreciated. I don't suppose you know anything about his brother, Tommy? He also was single, we think, and was a baker somewhere in the Mullingar area. Apart from Mullalys in Dominick St (my home street) I can't think of any others.

There are two cases of a Noel Kennedy Ballinalack in court for driving offences.
One in 1945 for dangerous driving of a tractor, he worked for the Westmeath County Council, and another in 1962 driving a lorry with out a licence working for Anthony L'Estrange.

Turned out to be a few reports of the same instance, Thomas Kennedy baker Mullingar owed rent in relation to a house in Ballinalack to the trustees of the late Thomas Gibbons Hawkesworth Smyth. An order of £2 a week instalment was granted to pay the £21,4.3 owed
