the places where the name DENEY was most often found between 1891 and 1815.
The South West of France (Gironde ) seems to be sure.

Are you sure he was born in Bordeaux (or surroundings) or could it mean "came from" Bordeaux ?
Have you searched the passengers lists etc... in the australian archives?

I go on searching the archives of Bordeaux , found a Marguerite Deney , born in 1854 , father Jean, different mother from Marie's.

Did he marry in Australia? Marriages are often more informative and accurate than death records, and depending on where in Australia may give names for both parents and other useful information.

Thank you both for your replies....

John DUNN (DENEY) born 1862 in Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France, this is what is written on the sheet of paper I was given with father Jean.....John DUNN married in Adelaide, South Australia, August 13, 1883...this is all I have to go on, it's proving to be very difficult to find more on his family.

The family I am helping have nothing else, and they say it's all a mystery to them.

Regards

Cienna

Is it written on your paper that he was DENEY?
I see he was 21 when he married in Australia.Could it be his parents who emigrated with him, or did he emigrate alone?

The name DENEY seems to me the most probable name (transformed in DUNN) in the decennal tables of Bordeaux at that time , but it is not certain for the moment.

Written on the sheet of paper....John DUNN born 1862 Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France, variations of the surname are.......DUNET, DU-NAY, DUNNET or DENEY.......not sure which one it may be but family feel it may be DENEY....

Not known if his parents came to Australia with him, no one knows anymore than what they have.

Thank you joger for all the time you are putting into this.....very much appreciated.

Cheers

Cienna.

Okay so he was Dunne at marriage.  Unfortunately South Australia records have less details than some others but it would be good to know exactly what

Where/when did he pass away?

You might be able to find his immigration here:

There are a few John Dunn entries but I don't see any Deney

Thank you jorose for the links, John DUNN.....came down as DUNN, family are under the impression he changed his name when he left France.

He married Fanny Vivian LYALL...13 Aug 1883, in Adelaide, South Australia.

Would like to find more on Joh's ancestors but I think it's going to be a chore......thank  you again.

Regards

Cienna.

Well, I see no marriage John DUNN or DUNNE and Fanny LYALL at all . What have I done wrong?

Changing his name before leaving France seems unprobable to me , but I may be wrong.

By the way , I  found no DUNN (nor DUNNE) in the birth registers of Bordeaux between 1852 and 1872 ( I thought it was a possibility that his name was already DUNN before he left France , as there are quite a few British names in this area)

I think you need to concentrate on SA for leads before looking further afield. What is on this birth certificate?

SA BDM birth
1884   DUNN   John George Micheal   parents John DUNN /   Fanny Helene LYALL
Norwood   327/344
