ChatterleyVillage
« on: Monday 14 January 19 16:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction concerning a village called Chatterley in Staffs (nr Wolstanton/part of Wolstantion). I have a relative who was a gamekeeper here so was trying to find woods/estates etc where he may have worked.
Tried googling ( British History/Gen uki etc] but only Colliery or Lady Chatterley's lover :-[ coming up.
Any help appreciated.

Chatterley village is mentioned here:

Chatterley lies in the valley between Tunstall and the Trent and Mersey Canal.  It had its own station on the railway until sometime post 2nd WW through to early sixties.  The valley was dominated by the Goldendale Iron and Steel furnace works.  I don't recall that there was ever much to the place bar the industry, the station and a few houses.

Hi and thanks to you both.

Just read a bit about Alsager where he lived/worked as gamekeeper and also worked at Haslington as same. The co-incidence is that the Vernon family had estates at both so that might be a clue as to who they worked for..hope so! I am just going to find out more about Vernon fmily if I can to see if they had any estates/woods etc in or near Chatterley.

On the Wolstanton side of the valley, across the canal and railway line, the hillside rises up through Bradwell Wood.  Chatterley is also close to the Harecastle Tunnels, and here you find Bathpool Park and woodlands.  It's possible you'll find historic links here.

The map is scrollable, but you can see the station at the top. No mention of "Chatterley Village" on the map though you might expect it to be around the station. There are a number of "woods" around the area. A huge one called Bradwell Wood just south of the above link.

This link to Bradwell Hall shows Hargreaves 1832 map, and says that the road to the Hall was by way of Bradwell Wood and Chatterley Hall.  Bradwell Hall was part of the Sneyd family properties; I've never heard of Chatterley Hall before.
