Drumachose Derry Place: Derry Beg - Surname: Campbell
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 06:23 GMT (UK) »
I am descended from Mary Jane Campbell believed to be daughter of James Campbell and Anne McBride. Mary Jane was baptised 16 Mar 1824 in Christ Church Drumachose and per parents were of Derry Beg Near Drumachose.  A brother William was baptised in 1826.  Mary Jane travelled to Australia as a Free Settler and married Henry Scull. Mary had a very difficult life to much to write here but she named her first born as James Campbell Scull and another child William.  I have not been able to find anything about her parents apart from a probable marriage in Londonderry in June 1819. I have not found any deaths or any detail about them.  William went to Canada and died there in 1905 being baptised on 29 Apr 1826 in Drumachose.
Any help appreciated.  Yours sincerely smuggler

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Drumachose is the name of the civil parish- https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/drumachose/

Derry Beg is a townland in the parish- just outside present boundaries of Limavady-
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/keenaght/drumachose/derry-beg/

Christ Church is the Church of Ireland Parish Church in Limavady (formerly Newtownlimavady)-
https://www.derryandraphoe.org/drumachose-christ-church

"Londonderry" can refer to the city or the county.

The 1831 census for County Londonderry is online but there isn't a Campbell listed in Derrybeg (only name of head of household will be listed) - DED is Fruithill. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

William went to Canada and died there in 1905 being baptised on 29 Apr 1826 in Drumachose.
Do you know where in Canada William settled?

May be unconnected but...

A James Campbell died 1877 age 88 (born c1789) Limavady registration district- image isn't online yet but will be eventually.
https://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2019/01/irishgenealogyie-latest-on-overdue.html
Also a James Campbell died 1867 age 85 (born c1782) but Tamlaghtard-

Of course your James Campbell could have died before the start of civil registration of deaths (1864) or moved out of the area.

Hello Aghadowey. Thank you for your replies.   Firstly the marriage was in St. Columb's Londonderry City (19 June 1819)  - my apologies I tend to refer to the county as Derry and the city as Londonderry. I have found it difficult to identify which is him on the Census - one that looked likely was the 1901 Census and he was shown as living in Alberta, The Territories. This included a family with William Campbell and Eliza L Campbell. Relationship to Jane Campbell, shown as head of house,l Jane Campbell is shown as wife with several children but William and Eliza shown as mother and father. Very confusing but I suppose a daughter of William could have married a Campbell.
William Campbell was shown as dying in Lamont Alberta Canada 12 June 1905, by a record in Family Search,  with father James Campbell.  Thank you again smuggler

I don't think that William Campbell is your family.

The William Campbell who died 1905 in Canada was William James Campbell and was married 1846 in Ballyreagh, Co. Tyrone (about 40 miles from Limavady) according to Find A Grave entry-

This William's wife was Eliza McFarland. William Campbell's father was Edward not James according to marriage record-

Hello Aghadowey

Thank you for the information about the death of William Campbell. That clears this up for me.  I will wait on Irish Genealogy to add further deaths to their records and see if I can pinpoint the death of James.

My grandmother was Irish, also of Derry (Ballykelly and thereabouts) and was the only known Irish connection till much later on with my research.  Thank you for your help and advice.

Hi
I'm new to this. I'm looking for information on the Campbell family in the Dungannon area. Anne Campbell was my great, great grandmother. She married James Fox (a Butcher) around 1857 in Dungannon. Her father was Edward Campbell and her mother was Mary McGovern. Anne had at least five children with James between 1857 and 1869. He passed away and she married Peter McKenna. They lived Shamble Lane in Dungannon. I know that Anne passed away around 1904 in Shamble Lane Dungannon.
This is a longshot but I'd appreciate to speak to anyone with connections or information in this area.
Thanks
AnnC
