Ancestry Sync

I've been dabbling with family history for some time but have decided it's time to take it seriously! At the moment I have lots of unorganised paperwork and two trees on Ancestry.co.uk - one for my father's side and another for my mother's. What I'd like to do is buy a good software package (I'm thinking Family History Maker or Roots Magic) that will allow me to: a) organise my paperwork and b) keep synced with Ancestry so my relations can keep an eye on things. It would probably be good if I can export what's currently on Ancestry to the software too, otherwise I'd probably need to start from scratch. What are people's experiences? Is one program better than the other for keeping things in sync? Is it better for the software to sync from Ancestry or vice versa? Thanks for any tips.

I use Family Tree Maker for the very reasons you mentioned.  The synch with Ancestry works well and the software will tell you when it is safe to do so.  I like that feature.  If I am in a library and don't want to sign on to a public internet connection, I still can add my new information in FTM and then upload (synch) to Ancestry when I get home.

Thanks for your tips; I'm giving Roots Magic a free trial at the moment to see how that works out. On a separate issue I note you are researching the Jones name in Wiltshire, am am I. I doubt we are looking at the same family but you never know!

I also use FTM and have done so for many years.   The latest version seems very stable although it still has some of the same quirks that it had when under the ownership of Ancestry.   Quite often you will have an individual with no hints being shown, if you then carry out a search on ancestry.co.uk, the individual will appear as expected.   More interestingly is that it is not unusual to have different hints appearing for an individual when using the mobile app - work that out 

In terms of sync, it works well in both directions, so you are able to update a tree with either FTM or on the web or mobile app, the choice is yours.

Yes FTM because it also downloads media files when synced.

I used PAF for ever until it went under.       

but found it had a few flaws.

found no problems with FTM -- unless its Windy   wont allow syncing then for some reason.. praps the rellies get mixed up in the wind

BUT someone mentione that Roots magic created great print out trees.. so I got that to see and havent as yet managed to do much with it..
It does seem great though..
