My stab would be at Royal Engineers who wore (and still wear) a grenade badge above sergeants stripes as seen in the sergeants in the pic.  I see no other distinguishing marks.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Super photograph, looks like Boer War or same period. They all have pistols. Beyond that, don't know.

I was hoping this was the case - this evidence would support my current evidence. My nan (whose photo it is) said it she think one of them is my Great Great great grandfather - who did serve in the Royal Engineers .....

Three is a Sergeant (Serjeant). Two is a Corporal and (uniquely to the RE) one stripe was worn by Second Corporals and Lance Corporals.

If he served in the Boer War then medal list are findable.  Do you want to share details of dates/name??

Yeah sure I have service records and access to ancestry and Fold3
It could be. George Frederick Evans (jnr) - b1872. d1913. Reg - Royal Engineers regiment no 21250, did serve in India but not sure of the period. He was a sergeant (supply)

Or GFE snr who was also a Sargent.... and died 1926

21250 was in India 91-96 which would fit well with the photo.  He held the ranks of L Cpl to Sgt during that spell.  He was actually an Engineer Clerk finishing as a Quartermaster Sergeant.

Not sure about your other one, can't find his rtecord.
