499 Glasgow Road, Wishaw - where was it?
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for some map help - can anyone advise where 499 Glasgow Road would have been? I know it was in District 628, Enumeration book No 19 but I can't seem to locate the exact location on a modern map.

Thanks

Tracey

Hi

It's the 1901 census I was referring to - the property was later owned by my 2x great grandfather and he died there in 1917.

I'm familiar with Wishaw and know where Glasgow Road is but it's obviously changed a lot in the last 100 years lol.

That map is about the closest you are going to get - it was surveyed in 1896.

If you can get at a microfilm copy of the census in a local library or family history centre, you can do a virtual walk round the map and see exactly where Enumeration Book 19 covered.

NLS have digitised the large scale 1/1250 1/2500 for 1944-1967 some of which show street numbers. Looking at Wishaw it was surveyed in 1956 and 499 Glasgow Road was located then about where ATS Euromaster Tyres is now, this is assuming that no renumbering had been carried out. As Forfarian has suggested you need to locate the address in the census and try to position it with identifiable  landmarks and/or adjacent streets.

In 1905 and 1915 it was owned by Andrew Thomson

In 1920 it was owned by Andrew MacDonald

It doesn't appear on the 1895 V.R.s

Not an easy address to pinpoint, that's for sure.

according to my 1925 Wishaw street directory, 499 Glasgow Road was part of "Belhaven View".
There were 26 separate addresses for Belhaven View. The house numbers ran from 469 to 501a. There were 10 houses with either "a" or "1/2" so part of the building(s) may have been two-story, these numbers all ran from 483 - 501, every other one had an "a" or a "1/2".
In 1925, number 499 was occupied by John Thomson, miner. He was in good company as number 469 was occupied by Thomas Winning, miner. He was quite likely the father of the late Thomas, Cardinal Winning (1925 - 2001).
Other addresses on Glasgow Road in 1925 were Marshall Place, Charlotte Place, Clyde Terrace, Oakswell, Gosforth Crescent, Norvals Port, Excelsior Place, Pretoria Place, Woodside Place, Elizabeth Terrace, Golf View, Muircroft Terrace, Mason Place, Caskie Lea Place, Stewart Crescent, Duntreath, Rosemount Place, Yenikale Place, Ethel Place, Hambleton Terrace, Cecilia Terrace, Almond Park Terrace, Traquair Place (still there) Sunnyside Bridge, Sunnyside (last two were numbered internally but we know where Sunnyside is anyway) and finally a building with a clue!
Primrose Place, Whitegates. This building was numbered 496 1/2 - 541.

So, tigger_lass, if you are familiar with the area you will know (if you are old enough) where Whitegates was.  The last number in Belhaven View was 501a and the first number in Primrose Place was 541. This is confusing and I think it is simply due to sloppy work on the part of whoever compiled the directory, the numbers are all mixed-up, so we just have to do the best we can. Frew's garage, which was at the Whitegates, is listed as number 532 - 530. The gatekeeper for Whitegates lived at number 440, which was part of Woodside Place but that must have been adjacent to the gates themselves, it was a busy railway crossing so the keeper would have to have lived right there. (Perhaps this could have been opposite Frew's garage?).
The highest street number seems to be 539, which must have been as far down as the Victoria St & Glencairn Avenue part of the main street.

That's about as much as I can discover from this directory but there is an old two-story tenement building still there on that part of Glasgow Rd, opposite Excelsior Street however Google maps has that as number 684. I think the numbers may have been changed though as the entire street has altered so much over the years.

good luck!
