There is this family in 1861 639/42/38

Margaret Crawley 40 yrs Charwoman b Ireland
Anne Crawley 11 yrs b London
Margaret Crawley 8 yrs b London
Michael Crawley   5 yrs b Portsmouth

GRO shows a  Michael Crawley b 1855 with mother Pellington but I don’t think that is the same Michael.
He is in 1871 1131/71/27 with a mother Ann and sibling with mmn Pellington.

There is a death for Michael Crawley 40yrs in 1859 Portsea

Also in 1861 in Portsmouth - 639/13/22

Michael Crowley   23 (?)     Cutler     born Northumberland
Ann   35                                                 ditto
Michael 6           born Portsmouth
Ann 6                    ditto
Thomas 2               ditto

This is the family where children's mother is Pellington - Michael jnr and Ann jnr were twins.

So we have 2 Crawley families in Portsmouth in 1861, both with a son Michael born Portsmouth ca.1855 - only the Pellington one registered as far as I can see and that not the right family.

Well done, heywood, for finding 'Annah' with her mother Margaret in 1871.

I'm trying to find Margaret in 1851 with Hannah or variants thereof and not having much luck.   Since Hannah stated her father was named Michael when she married then presumably Margaret should be with her husband in 1851.

If Michael and Margaret didn't register their son Michael 1855 I'm getting the horrible feeling they may not have registered their 2 daughters either.

I had seen the other family in a later census but not 1861 - good find, Annette.

Also a good  thing is that Michael who died 1859, can’t be the Michael of 1861 so the death certificate might help.

Hannah Crawley is not the daughter of John and Ann - her father is not named John!

Marriage 11/1/1871 St. John's Cathedral, Portsmouth - Herbert Waters of Clarence Barracks, father Francis Mercer (?), and Hannah Crawley of Portsea, father Michaelis (i.e. Michael).

Need to be looking for a Hannah, dau. of a Michael!

Annette

Who were the witnesses to this marriage?

Witnesses to 1871 marriage were Joanne Duggan and Maria Bone.   Not able to view actual marriage certificate so don't know what occupation given for Hannah's father Michael although it may well just state deceased.  What I'm seeing on FindMyPast is the latin Catholic register.
