The marriage to Mary Ann Walker 25 Sep 1864 shows his father as Henry Hofmeyer but I can't quite read his occupation.

John I think says occupation cooper.  Address at time of marriage 66 Black church lane

1881 census shows him as George with wife and children

George Hofmeyer 42
Maryann 39
George 14
Mary Ann 12
Louisa 7
Alice 5
Clara 3
Charles 9 months

1891 shows one more child
Fred 8

However I haven't found George on a census prior to 1871 yet.

The arrival document is for George Hofmeyer native of Germany a clock maker.
From what port arrived it says Rotterdam.

Now if your chap was only a baby in 1839 he can't have been a clock maker so that can't be him :-\

Age isn't correct but in 1861 there is a

Johan G Hofmeyer 36 single right occupation cooper born Germany down as relative with an August Hofmeyer and family.

August arrives from Germany via Rotterdam in 1853 and by 1870 is in the US.
