Looking for Smith's from Swannington/ Coleorton
« on: Wednesday 16 January 19 20:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to research my Dad's side of the family who's surname was Smith. But have hit a dead end so was wondering if anyone would be able to help me?

I am searching for:
George Smith, born 1822 (ish) and died in 1905 - can't find a birth certificate.
Married Sarah Robinson around 1841-1846, but not found marriage certificate.
Worked as a coal miner in Swannington and was from the parish. The earliest census I can find with a George Smith is 1841 but it looks like he was a lodger with another family which weren't his parents.

I am going to search the archives in Wigston this weekend, but I would be very grateful for any information that anyone has on George

Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to Rootschat

Prior to 1.7.1837 there were no birth certs - only possible baptismal entries in parish records

What is his actual birthplace given on census records as the 1851 has 2 entries - both b 1819 but one b Stableford and the other born Gt Dalby.  Neither were miners

EDIT

He is in Derbyshire in 1851 - eldest child aged 4 so marriage more likely 1844/45

Where did you get Sarah’s maiden name from?

1861 has a 9yr old son George.  The only George Smith birth in Leics with mmn Robinson was in 1849.  The 1851 only has a 4yr old Mary Ann and 1yr old Thomas

1861 also has William 6 and James 1 but there are no births for any of the children in Leics with mmn Robinson

Possible illegitimate births for George SMITH;
23 Jan 1818 Barwell. Mother SARAH a Servant, abode Potters Marsden
20 May 1819 Hinkley, Mother ELIZABETH a F.W.Knitter

I may be clutching at straws here but in 1841 George is living with the Glover Family.

Marriage;
30 Dec 1823 Whitwick, Leicester
Samuel GLOVER to Sarah SMITH

1841 Samuel/Sarah have a Daug Louisa age 2

GLOVER, LOUISA, Mothers mn SMITH
GRO Reference: 1838  M Quarter in MERIDEN UNION  Volume 16  Page 367

Im in OZ but from a bit of googling Swannington is about 13 miles from Barwell

Trish :)

According to the birth of Harriett Glover on 12th March 1833 at Griffydam, Wesleyan Methodist, Sarah was the daughter of James and Mary Smith.

She fits the birth of Sarah baptised in Coleorton on 1st February 1801.

A James Smith married a Mary Knight in Whitwick on 15th January 1789.

Possibly several other children in Coleorton.

Sarah could be the mother of George but I can't find any details.

David

Oh wow! So as there is no father on the marriage info for George and Sarah Roberts, then does that mean George was definitely illegitimate? Or could it be that his parents died at a young age? Although I did see that he was living with the Glover family. So it is possible that Sarah, daughter of James and Mary could be his mother? If Sarah was his mother maybe Samuel Glover isn't his father but he married Sarah afterwards?
