Could I have help on the John family please?
« on: Thursday 17 January 19 20:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello - first post so if I have committed any forum faux pas, I apologise!

I am really stuck on my 3rd gt grandfather Philip John born 1821 in Monmouthshire. He married Charlotte Wagenor/Wagener and their daughter Mary was my 2nd gt grandmother.

I have found Philip on the 1841 census - he is registered at the Blaenavon Ironworks as a moulder. With him is a William John, also a moulder and also aged 20. I'm assuming they are brothers. I cannot, however, for the life of me find his birth or his parents names. Would anyone have any idea where to start please?

Also, if anyone has any idea why he (and many others) appear to be living at the Ironworks rather than at an address, I'd be really grateful for enlightenment!

Thanks for reading and any help you might be able to offer.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There is an online tree with a copy of Philip's marriage cert. 14 Feb 1846 to Charlotte. His father is recorded as William, unfortunately the image is not complete and therefore the occupation of Philip's father is missing.

Don't think the Llancarfan baptism is him - it's well away from the place of birth on 1851. Llancarfan Philip is a grocer married to Jane and they're in Aberdare in 1851 [although Ancestry has transcribed his pob as Llandinam, Glamorgan. Image possibly Llancarfan].

They're clearly a separate couple from Philip & Charlotte, who I haven't found yet in 1861  [now found]

Thank you both so much - this is awesome! You've found more in half an hour than I've found in three months!

I think Philip and Charlotte are in Merthyr Tydfil in 1861 but they've been written as Phillips Johns and Charlote Johns.
