Elam Hope - Trial and sentence please
« on: Friday 18 January 19 15:27 GMT (UK) »
I have seen a reference on a certain web site that I do not subscribe to, regarding the trial of Elam Hope on 5/7/1883 in Kent...possibly the Assizes. If anyone could look up the details of the crime and sentence he was handed, I would be most grateful.
Thanks in advance

JJen and *Sandra*,
Thank you for such speedy replies. This chap was a farm bailiff at one time so why he stole someone else's lamb is a mystery.
Much appreciated, thanks again

Further to my previous query, can you find out exactly where Elam was in the 1891 census? There is reference to him being in Hampshire and I assume he was still serving his sentence. Perhaps he was on the Isle of Wight.
Thank you

Hi Sandra,
Yes that does appear to be him though his birth year is 2 or 3 years adrift. There were no other Elam's born in Frittenden and he was married to Annie. Looks like he didn't serve his full 12 months of hard labour! But, there could be an error in the transcription as there is a Newnham in Kent and that is not many miles away from Bearsted where the family were living in 1881.

Thanks again

I need to correct the last message. For some reason I was thinking Elam had to serve 12 years and he only had to serve 12 months.....must be getting tired!
