With Annie's age details for James Haywood from the 1841 census entry for the family, and Colin's details from 1851, this looks a possibility for the death/burial of James Haywood:

James HEYWOOD 65
02/10/1842
Ref 685/2 510 123
St Cuthbert's

Annie, as you mention, Freecen also have the familiy on the 1841 transcript. They show Mary as aged 40 which fits with her death age etc.

Just an observation which may be of interest is that in the 1851 Census Mary-Ann is living in Semple Street, Edinburgh and she dies in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. They are actually just round the corner from each other so she did not move far between the 1851 census and her death in 1868.

Monica,

I did wonder about the age being different on both & an error as I haven't looked at the original but names all fitted & ages of the others.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the responses! I didn't have much information on James Heywood other than his name and being from Edinburgh so that's useful that I've got more details now. I assume Mary Ann was born in Edinburgh as it looks like she didn't move around much at least once she was married.
I have a visual impairment which makes research difficult to please forgive any silly questions :)

The 1841 census shows James Heywood as born in England.  What was the occupation showing for him on wife's death reg? A little hard to read.

There are a number of James Heywood, soldiers, who could connect to Mary Ann's husband James showing on https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_ep=james%20haywood&_dss=range&_sd=1790&_ed=1830&_ro=any&_st=adv

I wonder if any of the children's christening entries gave any clues as to father James' regiment? He shows as a labourer in 1841.

I found a baptism certificate of one of the children (james), it shows his father James Haywood as a labourer in 1830.

Is it quite common for spelling of surnames to change slightly over time? As I have Heywood on some records and Haywood on others.
