According to the 1900 census, Bernardino immigrated in 1885.  Is this his arrival in Boston on the 'Paladin' from the Azores on 17 April? 1885?

If so, his mother's surname would be Souza.

I'm trying to locate a website that I came across several years ago.  It dealt with history/whaling/fishing/genealogy of New Bedford, Massachusetts [where many immigrants from the Azores settled].  I was not looking for information on Portuguese immigrants myself but I did notice that it had a whole section on Azorean roots and there was some sort of a discussion group or messaging system.  I'm sorry I'm a little fuzzy on the details but I'll keep looking.  At any rate, that part of the country  - southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island - is the place to look for people who specialize in Azorean immigrants and genealogy.

I just can't find that New Bedford site.  I know I'm not imagining it.  I'll have another go at it tomorrow.  Meanwhile, here are some Azores sites:
