Looks like he married in Scotland so have you looked on SP and downloaded his marriage cert which will at least give you his parents names and mothers maiden name.

Unless his actual birthplace is given on later entries you may not get the info you want.  1891 just shows Ireland and I can’t find him in 1901

Don't know where Wigtownshire has come from - here's the 1881 entry - 62 Commerce St Glasgow

James McDowall    41 b Ireland - storeman
Isabella McDowall    34 b Stornoway, Invernesshire
Donald  7 b Glasgow
James Derby    45 lodger b Ireland
Mary Derby    49 lodger b Glasgow
Parish Glasgow Govan ED 4 Page 15 Line 2

If the above is accurate then James was born in Ireland c1840- years before the start of civil registration of births (1864). Do you have him in other census years? if so, please give us the details.

Bit of guesswork here as there are several Isabella McDonald's b Inverness around the same birthyear
You will need to download a copy of the 1871 marriage cert to get her parents names - but if her father was Donald occ ships carpenter and if her mother was "Jess" then there is an 1851 entry for Renfrewshire showing her father was born Inverness and her mother Egypt
Did you get the marriage to see what James' parents are called?

Another topic but you haven't responded with more details as requested-
