Brampton PR at Cumbria Archives
« on: Sunday 20 January 19 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I am hoping to confirm the marriage of James Martin - one alternative and, I think, the more likely is 3 May 1837 to Thomasine Martin. None of the transcripts I've seen give any further detail.

I'm hoping someone could look at Brampton marriages 1837  (shame it wasn't the following quarter!) maybe also banns if they are available and give me any additional info there is - I'm hoping for details of James parents. I know this is unlikely but maybe the names of witnesses may give me a clue. James should be of full age as he was born about 1808

thanks
Judith

Hi Judith

Checked the parish records.  The Banns were read on 16, 23 and 30th April.  Unfortunately there are no detail about either James or Thomasine parents.  It gives James' Parish as Lanercost and Thomasine as Brampton. The witness were Christopher Armstrong and Richd Worsley (it could read Rick).

Re: Brampton PR at Cumbria Archives - related request

Hi

Regarding my request/response below I have now got info. from Canadian records that confirms this is right marriage. My next task is to try and find Thomasine's parents! From Canadian records she was probably born c1810 but I can't find a baptism for her in Brampton in that period. There is a baptism in 1837, a fortnight after she married, i.e. 21/5/1837 parents William & Ann and wonder if by some chance she could have been baptised later in life; another reason for wondering this is that the 2nd of James & Thomasine's daughters is named Ann and she has a son called William.
I wonder if the baptism in May 1837 could be checked to see if there is anything to suggest that this  could have been a late baptism - I know I'm clutching at straws!

Thank you again
Judith

Hi Judith
the 1861 census for Brampton has a Thomasine Martin b about 1838, living with her father William Martin, a widower.
So the baptism in 1838 might well be for that lady.
However if its a family name, it might we worth looking into William and his family to help you identify if he might have had a sister called Thomasine?
There was also a Presbyterian Church in Brampton - I don't think the baptisms there are on the IGI, so it might be worth looking at that, too.
cheers

Thank you Robbiesmum - what a wally I am (told you I was clutching at straws!!). Never thought to check the obvious like the census; shows we're all old and daft enough to overlook the basics!!!!!

There is probably a connection but not the one I was seeking.

Thank you
Judith  :) :)

I also noticed there was a baptism on the IGI of a Thomas Martin 1832 in Brampton, mother Thomasine Martin. That might also be worth checking out, it might mention an address or place name? Also probably clutching at straws but you might as well try anything!
cheers
