Does this say Punynomia on DC?
« on: Sunday 20 January 19 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I come again to the font in hopes of deciphering the following snippet from a DC.

I know it says "confinement 12 days" but then it looks like Punymonia which I have never heard of, nor seemingly has the Googler.

It certainly doesn't look like pneumonia and I know she died shortly after child birth.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Was this a childbirth death?

I think it says PURYMONIA

I've not heard of that either!

I wonder if it's a colloquial term of some sort for Puerperal Fever  and that the Confinement 12 days means she was in labour for 12 days, and then had the fever (Purymonia) for 48 hours?

I think the third letter is an 'r', not an 'n', which makes it 'purymonia' - which doesn't help really!
All the 'n's written are formed differently to this third letter.

I think your explanation is a possibility.
I have been trying to find post childbirth causes of death too.

I think the confinement 12 days is referring to postpartum confinement, meaning the baby was born 12 days previously to her death date.

As for the cause, it's almost like the writer tried to combine puerperal (as in puerperal fever) with pneumonia... perhaps the Dr's handwriting was too hard to read for the writer to transcribe with any sense of accuracy?  ???

Hi again,

Thank you for all the replies. As I mentioned this was shortly after childbirth. Her son was born 20th Dec and she died on 31st.

I tried purymonia and got no hits on the Googler for that either.

The source is a PDF copy from the GRO so I don't think ordering the actually certificate would get me any closer.

I think I will just add it a purymonia with a side note.

Thank you all again.

Possibly pleuropneumonia?
If the person writing it down was not a medical person and unfamiliar with the word, that might have been what they came up with.

I think it could be “peripneumonia”. Apparently “pleuropneumonia” was a dangerous form of “peripneumonia”. “Purymonia” could be a misspelt abbreviation.

Here is a doctor in the 1840s having a rant about the creeping mis-use of the term following widespread employment of the stethoscope :
