His service record has not survived but his medal record and other snippets show that:

He began service with the Herefordshire Regiment which was an all Territorial regiment joining right at the beginning of the war (calculated from his gratuity).  He is shown in the records as both Herefordshire and King's Shropshire Light Infantry.  3rd Battalion Herefords (training and reserve in UK) were absorbed into 4th KSLI  (also reserves) in Feb 1915 and the medal roll show him as attached to 6 KSLI who fought in France.  A further complication is that in the 1917 Territorial Force re-numbering, Herefords were allocated numbers from the KSLI batch.  He does not have either of the two Star medals so was not overseas until after the end of 1915.  While only his record would have shown when he transferred from one to the other, this may at least explain why  the two regiments figure on different records.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Is there anyway I can find out exactly where he served in France, and why he came home?

The last action they were involved was Oct. 1918. It would be unusual (but not impossible) for a man to have survived 4 months before dying.
The Gratuity list doesn't state he died of wounds.
I would suggest getting his death cert:
Weaver George E
Aged 36
March Q/Bromyard/6a/926
In 1919 Europe was in the grip of a flu epidemic. He may have been one the millions that died as a result.
Their diary is on ancestry if you have a sub:

If not you can download it from TNA for £3.50:
