Supervisor Machynlleth 1796
« on: Sunday 20 January 19 21:25 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me please what a Supervisor might have done in Machynlleth in 1796. I have a John Packer described as a 'Supervisor' on his daughter's marriage certificate in 1796.
Thank you.

You may have the following already:-

The marriage bond is available at NLW, which might help - http://discover.library.wales/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=44WHELF_NLW_VU1

The birth of their son, Samuel in 1789, also calls him a supervisor. His marriage in Somerset in 1769 is only a transcription and gives no occupation - John Packer and Martha Chaffey.

A possibility,  given results  of various Google searches suggest that it could be an Excise Officer. See, for example:

Thanks DCB, I hadn't found his marriage.

In case you haven't seen the baptism of Samuel:-

Samuel, son of John Packer, Supervisor, and Martha His wife, formerly Martha Chaffey. Born 1st January 1789 and baptised on 6th January.

There are some burials in Machylleth which probably link to Sarah and Samuel but the father is William:-

John son of Wm Packer, supervisor, died 11th July and buried 14th July 1792.

Elizabeth daughter of Wm Packer, supervisor, 10 days old, died 9th April 1787 and buried 16th.

Hi
I am looking specifically for John Packer's job - supervisor.
I am descended from John and Martha's daughter Sarah and her first marriage to David Morgan. I have all their dates and haven't looked for her siblings as I don't need their info yet. Today I have managed to confirm all Sarah's dates including her second marriage where other researchers have her dying in 1801,she remarried an Evan Rowland in 1809 - her first husband having died in 1806.
There don't seem to be any directories for this area and the late 1700's and early 1800's. Thanks for all the help.

I've checked Welsh newspapers online but nothing obvious.  They start in 1804 though.

I am with gadget on this, is appears that “ supervisor of excise” was a job description in the 1700s,
Another extensive thread on rootschat refers to to a question about “ widow of a supervisor of excise”
