Thanks for your replies Annie.

I have just seen them, so it will take a little while to digest  :D
I have come across some of the entries you mention. Being the family of some one else makes it more difficult.

I will follow up what you have said, but there is only one person who might have knowledge of the Lyon family.
As you say a tricky one to follow. I had thought I had cracked it but realised it was a different family from North Bute.

Looks like there were 2 marriages & this may have been your James' mother hence the reason he said she was deceased on his marriage?

LYONS AGNES 22
1879
503/ 71 Row or Rhu

Matching ref. for surname Hamilton.

Interesting, thanks Annie.

ps.
The witnesses to James's marriage to Annie were Charles Duncan and Mary MacDonald (spelling as on cert.)

A quick update based on 1901 Census for 41 Watergate,Rothesay.

The Rachael McFadden mentioned probably is the daughter of Lexy Walker and Peter McDonald and sister to Annie, James's wife.
They had a daughter,"Rachel" who was aged 15 in 1891 census.Annie was a year younger. Also the Walker family came from Dalibrog/Daliburgh.

Rachael and James 's wife Annie McDonald born in Daliburgh as per 1901 census.

At first glance the Agnes Hamilton connection looks good.

Andrew

You mentioned a Peter McDonald was illegitimate. Was that Lexy's husband?

Yes, there were 6 siblings, Mary (1), Rachel, Ann, Mary (2), Flora & Margaret.

Yes, Peter husband of Alexandrina/Lexy.

There were a few contenders for the birth of James Lyon(s) in the Glasgow area (not too many if discounting the ones with a middle name), nothing in either Dumbarton or Rothesay but I haven’t checked for him possibly being Hamilton?

Hi Annie,
Just an update.
One of your suggestions has proved to be the person I was looking for.

"Possible death for mother Agnes;

LYONS AGNES 50 1901 558/ 38 Rothesay
MCKECHNIE    AGNES 50 1901 558/ 38 Rothesay
KEDZIEN AGNES 50 1901 558/ 38   Rothesay "

I purchased the death cert of Agnes Lyon(s) and it was indeed the above.
Her maiden name was McKechnie. 1st marriage to Kedzian.
Her mother's name was Bryce, so maybe that was the confusion with her name being recorded as Bell.

Good news on that Andrew!  ;)

Glad to be of assistance.

The trials & tribulations of genealogy are somewhat taxing on the brain, keeps us alert & sane.

As it happens, I've been researching one of mine (a Uist MacDonald) in Rothesay last 2 days which I have to follow up!

I did follow this up which was info. I'd found (no references, just names) in 'Croft History' books by a Genealogist.

There appears to have been a mix-up with 2 women of same name marrying different men from the same family i.e. the one I was researching has been mistaken for the daughter of the other & I can tell you it too was a conundrum & took me a lot of time to sort out although I've yet to find my relative...ongoing!  ;D

I always believe in doing my own research (love it although a helping hand doesn't go amiss) & although the error in the book(s) is forgivable, people should never take anything as 'fact' until proven.

The books are full of very helpful info. & a great tool (worth every £ although not cheap) but as with the usual free sites we use, should never be used as solid proof!
I've found quite a few where info. is wrong while helping others & using info. I have collated from my own research from Baptisms/BMDs/Census' (SP)/MIs etc. but the % of wrong info. is low when you consider what's there on view.

I did find connections in my own family on both my paternal g/parents lines with your MacDonald/Walker although not in my direct line.
