I have found the record for Robert Sibley's wife and their younger children ( Alfred, Albert and Ada and Rosa) arriving on the Ionic to Wellington in 1892.

Hi Blacksmithy

Just a slight correction to above, for you.   ;)

http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/Leisure--Culture/Museums-and-galleries/Our-museums/petone-settlers-data/DisplayPerson/?Id=24502&SearchString=SIBLEY&Pa

The sons who accompanied Elizabeth SIBLEY, were Albert and Walter (and not Alfred -- see my following post).

Hi again Blacksmithy

The following link to the arrival of the ship "DUNEDIN" - January 1887, very much suggests that Robert SIBLEY and his two sons, Thomas and Alfred, travelled ahead of the rest of the family.  ;)

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/LT18870115.2.20

From passenger list for "Dunedin" - arrived Lyttelton - January 1887 ...
Mr Robert SIBLEY / Master Thomas SIBLEY and Master Alfred SIBLEY.

Thank you all so much for your searching, hunting and discoveries.  You all have such vast knowledge and are able to look outside the square.  This all stacks up accurately with some other family stories and does confirm the thought that Richard was likely born out of wedlock.  Roberts Will does not include Richard. My thought would be that Charles' death cert would likely hold the key to confirming his mother.  Despite putting Robert and older sons names in Papers Past they did not come up for me.
Many thanks again

Hi

Had just been about to post the link to Robert SIBLEY's probate file ... his will dated 1 August 1899 does of course include son Charles and it could be assumed that he is residing in New Zealand at that time as some other of his children named, are not allocated places of abode.  (Robert's spinster sister - Susan SIBLEY of London -  is the only beneficiary whose location is specifically stated. )

Robert's son John is not mentioned in the will - [which may suggest that he was deceased at that time ??]

Question:  Why is that you say that ... "Charles' death certificate would likely hold the key to confirming his mother"...    ???

Hi
thank you for the last posting, my thought was that it would confirm the name & spelling of his mother who we know is not Elizabeth Wood but Ellen Deamer, Deaman, Dayman.  From the above information I now know they were married in 1866 and Ellen died in 1875 however Ellen does not appear in the 1871 census with her husband who is with his in-laws.
Having said that Charles mother was not actually Elizabeth Wood I am wondering if he used her name rather than his real mothers name.
Just my thoughts and guidance is always appreciated.

A death registration is only as good as the informant and therefore the information can often be wrong.Unless the informant for Charles; death knew his background the information could well be wrong,

Cheers Janette
