marriage
« on: Monday 21 January 19 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I am looking for a marriage between William Birrell born c 1829 in Dunfermline and Isabella Young born c 1829 Dunfermline. They had a Daughter Mary who married my ancestor Thomas Wilson Dumble. On Mary and Thomas wedding certificate 1884 Dunfermline it states William as deceased occupation weaver. I cannot find Williams death. Isabella died in 1902 Dunfermline. I cannot find a death for Thomas  Wilson Dumble.  Mary died in 1938
any help appreciated
Heather

The marriage may not be on SP if it was earlier than 1855 as that was when civil registration started in Scotland. Church records may help but you obviously know that SP is the only place you can find most Scottish records. Possibly William travelled for work so the marriage could have been in England/Wales. Where & when was Mary born?

ADDED: If you have Isabella's maiden name from Mary's birth certificate, there is always the possibility that Isabella married as a widow so her name was not Young when she married William, though as I  understand it the Scottish records are indexed under both names.

ADDED 2: What date is the latest census you have William on?

Mary was born in 1856 Dumfirmline. I have looked for William on the census  but  cannot seem to find a William that is a weaver. Mary is coming up on the census as Mary Young /Dumble living with her mother Isabella Young.  Perhaps William and Isabella never married..It does however say on Mary's marriage certificate., mother Isabella Birrell maiden surname Young.

Does Isabella's death cert of 1902 say that she was a widow of William?

If you have Isabella's maiden name from Mary's birth certificate, there is always the possibility that Isabella married as a widow so her name was not Young when she married William, though as I  understand it the Scottish records are indexed under both names.
They are. Under Scots law a woman does not lose her maiden surname on marriage.

On a marriage certificate and on a death certificate the mother's surnames would be shown as something like 'Mary Brown, formerly Smith, maiden surname Jones' if she had been married more than once. It will always include the mother's maiden surname (assuming the person getting married gave the correct information and the Registrar wrote it down correctly) and it will always make it clear what the mother's maiden surname was.

Also, on a second marriage the marriage certificate makes it clear what the woman's maiden name is, and before 1855 the proclamations of banns generally include the bride's maiden surname, even if she has been married before.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I have looked for William on the census  but  cannot seem to find a William that is a weaver.
If you haven't found William on the census, could you direct us to the resource where he is said to have been born ca 1829 in Dunfermline?

The 1891 Heather refers to [on ancestry transcription only]:
Isabella Young   61 head
John Young   38 son flax dresser
Mary Young   4 daur scholar
Mary Dumble   40 daur yarn winder
Isabella Dumble   5 grand daur
Mary Dumble   4 grand daur
Dunfermline; ED: 18; Page: 11; Line: 25  80 Woodhead St

So these census sheets are worth looking at:

1881 same address
Isabella Young   51 housekeeper
John Young   27 son power loom linen yarn dresser
Mary Young   30 daur occ do
Margaret Young   24 daur occ do
Henry Young   14 hairdresser
Dunfermline; ED: 14; Page: 10; Line: 8

1871 Dunfermline Burgh; ED: 14; Page: 21; Line: 12 Woodhead Street West Side
William Young   42 weaver
Esebella Young   41
Mary Young   20
John Young   17
Margaret Young   15
Esibella Young   13
Henry Young   4

1861 Dunfermline Burgh; ED: 14; Page: 7; Line: 10; Woodhead Street
William Young   32 cotton damask weaver
Isabella Young   31
Mary Birrel   10 stepdaughter
John Young   7
Margaret Young   5
Isabella Young   2

& so possibly this marriage  ???
Name:   William Young
Gender:   Male
Marriage Date:   27 Sep 1852
Marriage Place:   Dunfermline,Fife,Scotland
Spouse:   Isabella Burrell
FHL Film Number:   1040106, 102191, 102194
