Isabella's death cert (as Young) of 3rd Sept 1902 has her as the Widow of William Young, weaver. John Young, Son, was the informant.

Her parents are recorded as Alexander Birrell, mason and Mary, MS Brown.

This fits with Josey's census info.

So it looks likely that Mary was born to Isabella Birrell before the latter's marriage to William Young. Her year of birth from census is consistently ca 1850/51. Are you sure Mary's marriage does not say mother Isabella Young MS Birrell? Isabella appears to have married William Young shortly after Mary's birth. Would be worth looking for a baptism of Mary in Dunfermline in 1850/1851.

I can only see the transcriptions on ancestry so cannot see if Isabella is a widow in 1881. Maybe look for William's death 1871 - 1881 on SP?  Free index shows [looking in Dunfermline only]

Mary's marriage certificate definitely states her father as William Birrell  weaver deceased. Mother Isabella Birrell maiden name Young. Mary's age states she is 31years. This puts her birth at c.1856. It appears the certificate has got the surnames the wrong way around.

Her age on the certificate is only what she told the minister/registrar!! As are the names.

Address looks perfect for Mary whose census age is consistently born 1850/51.

On Mary's death cert of 1938, her age is given as 86. This suggests a birth of 1851-52.
