Help dating School photograph
« on: Monday 21 January 19 16:16 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful for any help in dating this photograph from an independent school in England - we believe this to be the first 'whole school' photograph. The school was founded in 1903.
Many thanks in advance.

Before WW1? Girls and women seem to be wearing long skirts from what I can see of them. Some of the girl pupils are wearing frilly blouses like the one my grandma wore c1910-1914.
However as it was an independent religious school clothing might have lagged behind fashion. (Skirts at my convent-school were meant to be no shorter than knee-length in 1970s.)

I think it might be the first school photograph, the date seems about right, given the style of blouses worn.
Do you know something, every school photograph like this one, when I first see it I think it is my school.
I can honestly see girls who attended my school!
How weird is that?
I can name them!

(The very very very long rolled up one of my school was taken in 1952.Many years after this one.)

I would maybe go for 1908 to 1910 as the hairstyles look quite relaxed and going slightly wider styles.

3 small boys in sailor suits. 2 little boys front centre appear to be wearing smocks.
2 girls are wearing very wide collars.
There's an older, dark-haired boy on 4th row. He has one hand on a shoulder of a girl in front of him. She's smiling; so are the girls either side of the boy and a couple of girls directly behind him. What was he doing there?
Where is the school?

I would say mid-late Edwardian. I would like to know what the writing says on the bottom right border of the photo.

Some of those girly hairstyles look really severe, and formal, while some look very loose, trendy and casual.  An odd mix.

The rolled style is very Edwardian and would be the older girls,I think it was called” putting your hair up “and marked a stage in life.
Probably 18 or so.
The others look younger.
Most probably a Roman Catholic convent school but can’t think why such young children would be there .
