Jane McCallum, Buchanan, Brownlie
« on: Monday 21 January 19 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Jane was born 11th March 1859 but as her father appears to be illiterate her surnames had various spellings e.g. Macallain, McAllum, McCallian. Jane married Andrew Buchanan 29th November 1878, widowed 1890.She remarried 1890, in Wishaw,  to James Brownlie also known as Docherty. I am trying to trace Jane,s parents. Ann Nisbet and John McCallum who married February 1852 in St Mary,s R.C. Church , Hamilton. I have a feeling her father was born in Ireland so that might prove difficult but any help with her mother, Ann Nisbet would be appreciated.

Hi Maxcam,

Lucky for you we are under a heavy blanket of snow in this part of sunny Lanarkshire and I don't have much else to do   ;D

I have some of the records for Cambusnethan cemetery and old churchyard, situated in the village of Cambusnethan, between Newmains and the town of Wishaw.
your Jane didn't make it easy for me to find her but, although I don't have a date or place of burial I do have a good idea of her burial place at least. The records I have end at about 1917 and there are a few gaps, mainly around 1900 - 1903. I will get back to you if I find her date of interment.

This is what I did find and it's quite complicated! The clue to the whole thing was your statement that Andrew Buchanan had died in 1890, I had tried to find her using the McCallum spelling and had drawn a blank, finding Andrew opened it all up.

All dates here are of interment.

ANDREW BUCHANAN, surfaceman, Cambusnethan, aged 36 years. Married.
Parents - Andrew Buchanan & Catherine Carmichael.
Interred in plot D321 on 22nd January 1890.

STILL BORN FEMALE DOCHERTY, Cambusnethan.
Parents - James Docherty & Jane McCallion.
Plot D321 - 7th May 1894.

MATTHEW DOCHERTY, Cambusnethan, aged 2 months.
Parents - Thomas Docherty & Esther McCallion.
Plot D321 - 17th January 1895.

MABEL FLORENCE BROWNLIE, Gillhead, aged 3 years & 4 months.
Parents - James Brownlie & Jane McCallion.
Plot D321 - 1st October 1900.

ANNIE BUCHANAN, Motherwell, aged 5 months.
Parents - John Buchanan & Annie Fleming.
Plot D321 - 6th July 1908.

That's all for D321.
Next plot (or Lair as we call them here) is Number 29 Low Public. This is one of the original sections of the "new" cemetery, which was opened around 1861.

ESTHER JOHNSTONE, housewife, Newmains, aged 33 years, married.
Parents - Adam Nisbet & Margaret Watson.
Plot 29 Low Public - 3rd May 1862.

WILLIAM JOHNSTONE, pauper, Newmains, aged 33 years, widower.
Parents - John Johnstone & Ann Hamilton.
29 Low Public - 16th May 1862.

ANN McCALLAN, housewife, Newmains, aged 35 years, married.
Parents - Adam Nisbet & Margaret Watson.
29 Low Public - 25th September 1862.

ANN McCALLION, Newmains, aged 6 years.
Parents - John McCallion & Ann Nisbet.
29 Low Public - 7th February 1863.

ADAM BAIRD, Overtown, aged 14 months.
Parents - Philip Baird & Fanny Nisbet.
29 Low Public - 15th July 1867.

JOHN JOHNSTONE, engine cleaner, Omoa Poorhouse, aged 58 years. Unmarried.
Parents - William Johnstone & Esther Nisbet.
29 Low Public - 19th December 1910.
Registered owner of this plot at the time of this interment was -
Robert Semple, ironworks labourer, Seddonville, Newmains.

Finally, I found an interment in the old churchyard, the plot was owned by the Aitkenhead family and this is the husband of Elizabeth Aitkenhead who was buried there on 5th February 1889 aged 65 years.
PETER NISBET, furnace keeper, Newmains, aged 57 years. Married.
Parents - Adam Nisbet & Margaret Watson.
Old churchyard on 27th January 1873.

so, now you have Ann Nisbet, her brother Peter and her sisters Esther and Fanny (probably Frances).
Now you have to get to work on this lot!
good luck,
Lodger.

Completely off topic Lodger, I learned just this week that the first Loco built in Scotland was in 1838 at Kipps engine shed in Airdrie! Fancy that kid!  ;D

Maxcam,

The Aitkenhead plot in the old churchyard has
ROBERT NISBET, aged 20 months, interred 15th July 1890.
The plot also contains various others, surnames of Aitkenhead, McKendrick, Smithson and Walker.

My great-grandmother was born in Airdrie, Lodger.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
