Dora Bowen
« on: Tuesday 22 January 19 00:45 GMT (UK) »
I am just wondering if anyone can help me shed some light on this please...

1911 census shows the following Bowen family:

Charles, 37, Head
Florrie, 35, Wife
Charles Henry, 7, Son
Florence, 5, Daughter
William, 3, Son
Dora, 7m, Daughter

Married 7 years, 5 children, 1 deceased

(I've been told that an Arthur came along after this time too.)

Anyway, I've been researching the children tonight on the GRO website. It shows Charles Henry, Florence and William, with a mother's maiden name of ASTON. It then shows Dora with a mother's maiden name of LOWE. She is down as 'daughter' on the census. Her baptism record states that Charles and Florence are her parents. I haven't got any certificates as yet.

I had a quick search on any Arthur Bowen names, and only came up with one in the Aston area of Birmingham (which is where they were all born) in 1913 with the mother's maiden name of CLARKE. I cannot be certain this is THE Arthur I'm looking for at this stage though.

Why would the surname be LOWE on Dora's record and ASTON on the others. Is it possible they took her on as a baby maybe?

Edited to add: I have found a LOWE family census with a daughter Florence, in the Aston area. I'm still confused as to why Dora would show up on the census with the ASTON/BOWEN children.  ???

Freebmd shows Charles Frederick Bowen married Florence Aston in Birmingham Dec qtr 1902

He is listed as Charles Henry rather than Charles Frederick, so a good match.

Looking into Florence’s background may reveal why her maiden name is given as Aston on some births and Lowe on others.  Perhaps (e.g.) one was her birth name and the other a stepfather’s name.

There is also a birth reg for George Bowen, mmn Lowe, Sep qtr 1912 Aston.

I see that Arthur Bowen was “19” when he married Ellen Mary Webb at St Mary’s, Aston Brook on 26.12.1932, though he may in fact have been a few days short of his 19th birthday because later records, including his 1986 death registration, give his birthdate as 5 January 1914.

Likely birth reg per GRO Online: Arthur BOWER [sic], mmn LOWE, Mar qtr 1914 Aston 6d 504.

Maybe a long shot...
Possible marriage which may explain the Aston/Lowe connection.

Birmingham, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1937 (image on Ancestry)
Florence Lowe
Birth Date:   abt 1875
Marriage Date:   20 May 1899
Marriage Place:   Birmingham, St Edward, Warwickshire, England
Father:   George Lowe, occ. looks like Jeweller
Spouse:   William Seth Aston

Not finding a death for this spouse?

There is a Lowe family in 1881 with father George a jeweller that would fit with area and DOB.  Have you obtained the marriage cert in 1902 to confirm her father?
