Directory look-up request please, 1945-1963
« on: Tuesday 22 January 19 14:42 GMT (UK) »
I have found electoral roll entries for James R. MEIKLE from 1945 to 1963 at 16 Dalby Street, St Pancras, and in the 1939 register he was at 21 Dickenson St, also St Pancras.
If the directories give his occupation, it would help me to decide if he is the man I am looking for.

Many thanks
ainslie

Yes, it gave an occupation but 'unemployed' may have been pencilled against it.

Electoral registers do not give occupations

Street directories only give occupations for those trading on their own account: small shopkeepers doctors, the clergy, home tutors ("professor of xxx" in early years) etc., not employees. For the best chance, you need a small local directory, not the big fat London-wide one. I suggest you contact Camden Local Studies who will hopefully do a quick lookup for free as you have name and addresses.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.
