Where is Richard North?
« on: Tuesday 22 January 19 19:31 GMT (UK) »
Richard North was born about 1821 in Dawley and was a coal miner. He and his wife Eliza North were living in Dawley in 1861. However, by 1871, Eliza is living alone with her children but described herself as married. Richard isn't anywhere to be found as far as I can see  ??? and I can't find any possible deaths for either Richard or Eliza.

Family trees have his death in 1865 but that Shropshire death is for a 16 year old so not him.

Possible he was working away from home in 1871 hence wife stating she is married so he could have died away from home  :-\

Richard North parents John & Julia
Baptism  8 Apr 1821 Dawley-Magna, Shropshire

On the 1871 census, noted below from A....y, the age of 61 has been scored out, so not too clear but could be 61?

Richard North      abt 1810   ??, Old Park   Lunatic Inmate (Insane)   St Julian, Shropshire

This Richard is a miner and married, place of birth?? old park, from my memory of early Telford this is part of or near to Dawley.

The Richard North in 1871 is also on the 1861 census, b 1809 in Dawley, and in Old Park Road, married to Ann.

Richard North and Eliza are also at Old Park in 1861, so possibly related.

A Richard North was buried in Malinslee, near Dawley, on 3rd November, 1868. No age is given but the GRO index gives his birth as 1806.

I notice that the sons seem to be in Nottinghamshire in 1881 but only one is married.

Thanks  :)

Oddly even Eliza disappears after 1871 so I’m very confused by where they could have got to.

Have you looked to see if Eliza remarried?

Ancestry suggestion link the youngest son on 1871 , Albert, to Australia (don't have the subs to check the records). Could the family have emigrated in dribs and drabs?

I’ll certainly follow that up, thank you Milliepede.

How would I access Australian records please?

All of the brothers are in Nottinghamshire in 1881 and remain there, except for Albert.

There is an Albert of the right age who emigrated to America in 1883 but no details.
