Welcome to rootschat, George.

When and where did your father die?

Have you got his marriage certificate?

There is this possible birth from Scotlandspeople - register to search:

William Ewart Reid 1942
496/ 316      Dumbarton

Welcome from me too  :)

There is a death for an Isabella Reid, aged 78, in 2014 in Dumbarton. Her mother's maiden name is given as McPhee.

There is also a death for an Andrew Reid, aged 58, in 2001 in Perth. Mother's maiden name is given as McPhee. Can't see a birth in Dumbarton, likely born elsewhere?

which would give a birth around  1936, so too young to be the mother..

Certainly too young to be mother. I thought that death may be for a sister to William. This Isabella's mother's name is indexed as McPhee.

Aaah, sorry.  Sister.

So she(sister) would not have married?  I always confuse Scottish surnames in certificates.

I cannot see a 'Bella' McPhee/Reid marriage anywhere.

Not necessarily.

The index at SP lists all the surnames on a married woman's death certificate, including her maiden name and the surnames of all listed husbands. A search will find any one of those.

For example, I have in my tree Elsie Burgess McIntyre, born 1871 (and registered as plain Elspet McIntyre), who married John Brown, was widowed, married Robert Taylor, and died in Kelvingrove in 1949 aged 78. She is indexed as Elsie Burgess McIntyre, Elsie Burgess Brown and as Elsie Burgess Taylor.

Having found her under any one of those surnames, I can then search for her using no surname at all, but including year of death, age at death and district of death, and the results come up with all three surnames. Screenshot attached. However there is nothing to indicate which of the three is her maiden name - only the certificate will tell me that.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

George, you have enough here to order your father's birth cert from Scotlands People. This is the way to start your research. It will include your father's parents' details including their date of marriage and where they married (assuming they were married). With this info, you can move back with more confidence.
