Elizabeth Purkis (spinster, minor) married Henry Bray (bachelor, full age) at Portsea on 28 March 1849 by licence. Her abode was Daniel Street, Henry's abode was Queen Street. Her father was Charles Purkis - occupation butcher. Henry's father was John Bray, his occupation was grocer the same as Henry. The witnesses were Charles Purkis and another Purkis who just signed with initials for the forenames which looks like M.A.
Baptisms in Portsea
8 June 1823 - Charles Henry Purkis s/o Charles and Elizabeth, of Daniel Street, butcher
14 Sept 1824 - Mary Ann Purkis d/o Charles and Elizabeth. of Daniel Street, butcher
28 Feb 1826 - Emma Purkis d/o Charles and Elizabeth, of Daniel Street, butcher
3 Jan 1828 - George Purkis s/o Charles and Elizabeth of Daniel Street, butcher
3 May 1829 - Elizabeth Purkis d/o George and Elizabeth, of Daniel Street, butcher
I can't find a George who is also a butcher in Daniel street, so think must be a mistake by the vicar.
In 1841 at 39 Daniel Street
Charles Purkis age 40 occ butcher
Charles H Purkis age 15 (looks like ditto for occupation)
Elizabeth Purkis age 15
George Purkis age 15 (no occupation)
plus two servants.
There is a marriage for Charles Purkis and Elizabeth Cox in 1822 and a burial for Elizabeth Purkis, wife of Charles Purkis of Daniel Street in 1833.
But now it gets confusing
In 1851 in Lower East Street
John J Bray age 28 head mar grocer
Henry Bray age 25 brother mar grocer
Elizabeth Lovell age 41 aunt widow
Elizabeth Bray age 22 sister (looks like mar has been changed to ditto)
Is this Elizabeth sister to the Bray brothers and actually a widow or is she John's s-i-law and therefore Henry's wife
In 39 Daniel street in 1851
Charles Purkis age 51 head widower butcher employing 3 men
Elizabeth Purkis age 27 daughter unmarried
plus two servants
Is this a mistake and she is actually one of the older sisters - Emma or Mary Ann?
Has anyone an explanation, please?
