Has anybody any idea if this name is Gell Howard? I've never heard of such a name.

Thanks everyone, strange. It must date to about 1900, could it be a foreign name or a nickname?

She’s the “mother” - so if a birth cert what does it say elsewhere for the maternal details?

Good point, avm228.

Meanwhile, is this a certificate that was written out at the time the birth was registered? - in which case you would expect the registrar to have copied correctly what they wrote in the register.

However, if it's one that was written out later, it will have been produced either in a local register office as a first generation copy from the original register, by someone who hadn't met the informant/mother, or in the GRO as a second generation copy based on the local office's quarterly return, which would have been the first generation copy.

In either of these cases, a transcription error could have crept in.

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

It must date to about 1900

You must surely know the date of this document, plus lots of other information on it which would help identify the family concerned?
