Have you looked for them on the 1939 register which would give you their address.  1939 lookups are not allowed on Rootschat

How do you know they had a butchers shop in Hylton Road. The only Master Butcher named Morton in 1939 lived in Durham City, but of course he could have had a shop in Sunderland.

Presumably OP has christian name of “Morton the butcher” other than initial W so can use the 1939 to track them.  From the reports it looks as though they lived on the premises

Dear Stan

Once again you have come up trumps! I have been trying to find this family as my mother remembers the shop very clearly and recognises the location from the Google map for which you sent the link. I am trying to trace a "Sid" Morton who married a Ruby Green about 194*. As far as I can see, No 11 Hylton Rd was unoccupied as listed on the 1939 register. I have drawn a blank for all other avenues of research. How did you find a ref to Morton the butcher at No's 9 and 11?

Thank you

Dear CaroleW

Many thanks for your help. I have not found what I want yet but am reassured that such a family of butchers were around at the time.
