Dungey family, Mevagissey
« on: Thursday 24 January 19 08:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help with a bit of a mystery. My Dungey family are from Cornwall, my gt gt grandfather John Dungey b.1815/16 (naval pensioner) in St Ewe and my gt gt grandmother Elizabeth Tippett born in Truro approx 1820.They had three daughters Sarah Ann, Elizabeth and Mary Ann born 1853, 1857 and 1859. The 1871 census lists all the children's birthplace as Castletown Ireland. I've seen this birthplace in other records too.
In 1871 they were living in Mevagissey

Any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.,why would they be born in Ireland?

Was John Dungey in the Army, that could account for the children being born in Ireland   :-\

ADDED I see from the 1871 he was a Naval pensioner

Do you have John & Elizabeth on census prior to 1871, I see they married in 1849 Plymouth

the parish register entry for the marriage in 22 Feb 1847 shows he was of HMS Queen. His Royal Navy record available via FindMyPast shows that on 25 May 1849 he left HMS Queen and on 27 Aug 1849 until 13 February 1854 he was in the Coast Guard as a boatman. He then went to Navy as an AB until May 1856 when he rejoined the Coast Guard service as a boatman.

In 1846 his allotment was paid to his sister, Catherine Topham, of 10 Duke Street, Devonport. In 1847, this changed and the allotment was given to his wife Elizabeth of Mill Bay, Stonehouse, date of marriage noted as 22 Feb 1847.
