Nuneaton Records 17th Century
« on: Thursday 24 January 19 11:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm at a dead end in my Mortimer family tree and feel that access to the Nuneaton parish records between 1600-1700 may help.

I understand that they are largely water damaged but are they still accessible and if so where? Everything I've done so far has been online so not used to visiting register offices etc.

Thanks a lot
Ryan

Images are available for St Nicolas, Nuneaton from 1539 - Ancestry.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks, I don't have an Ancestry account and given that the records are said to be waterdamaged and difficult to read I assumed it would be better to see them in person as most may be emitted online?

Alternatively the BT's for Nuneaton 1674 onwards are held at Staffordshire Records Office, in Stafford.

If the records are so badly damaged, it is unlikely that you will be allowed to handle the original documents at the Records Office, but will have to rely on filmed copies.

Thank you both for your help. I've got the free Ancestry trial so that's helping to a degree.

That's great info Ciderdrinker. I am picking up after about 3 years of hardly researching, some of that I do remember coming across but it is hard to get my head around it all due to a number of William Mortimers being in Nuneaton at the time.

I do know that my ggggggg grandfather Edward Mortimer died in 1718 as a maltster- have seen his will and inventory. A shift from cordwainer to maltster seems like an odd move to me? And hence this may not be the same Edward, meaning that this William may not be my ancestor...

Seems very hard to get concrete proof at that time period and I really don't want to make assumptions, as inevitable as that may be

Hi
Well I may be wrong about his occupation ,the writing is very small and difficult to read and some of it is in Latin.
If you want to take a look yourself pm with your email and I'll send a copy along.
Or they are on FindMyPast but frankly it's not worth taking a subscription just for that.

ps the more I look at the more I think you're right.
It 's Edward Mortimere de Nun Eaton ,C--dor b --er (right on the edge of the paper)then Evan Taylor,Johan Jeffery de yardis? Conmisoner? Caroln Real  (And the last  c word could be the same word I'm struggling to read and took as cordwainer).

Sorry!

Nuneaton Library has all the St Nicholas records plus all the other churches in the area.
