Looking for Henry Charles Marshall of Donnington/Newbury
« on: Saturday 26 January 19 23:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,   I am trying to find what happened to Henry Charles Marshall born 1855 Donnington, Berkshire.
Have found him in census information up to 1881, when he was living with his parents David & Sarah Marshall in Newbury, he is shown as aged 26 years, a Widower, and a Grandchild also living at the premises named Sarah Amelia Marshall aged 5 years.

I have found marriage for Henry Charles Marshall  to Sarah Copas in 1874, but it appears that Sarah died in 1875 aged 17 years.

Henry Charles Marshall had one living brother George Marshall b. 1849 also living at the same address in 1881, three siblings, Mary Ann b. 1847, Harriett and Florence all died at birth or shortly thereafter.

Parents Sarah Marshall died in 1886 and David Marshall died in 1888.  Thereafter cannot find these two sons.

There is a Henry Charles Marshall born 1855 who died at Bankstown, Australia in 1940.   We have found quite some interesting history on this family in Australia, but whether this Henry Charles Marshall matches up with the Berkshire gentleman, we have been unable to ascertain.   Cannot find immigration records for him, but this gentleman married Elizabeth Ann Smith in Australia in 1888.

If anyone can assist me with any records in Berkshire, would really appreciate that.

Regards
Jan

Does the Australian 1888 marriage cert give any parental details?

Marriage was in 1888 at Bathurst NSW, but unfortunately online research here in Australia, no longer shows the parents names.

Thought maybe someone might be able to find any shipping records of Henry Marshall leaving sometime after 1881.    It appears that Sarah Amelia Marshall aged 5 years in 1881 census, a Sarah Marshall aged 15 years, is shown working as a Servant in 1891 census, and we think she most likely married a Thatcher at a later date.

Still trying to find out more information on her whereabouts.

Have just found Henry Charles Marshall death notice in 1940 in Sydney, his parents David & Sarah Marshall.    Feel this must be our man from Newbury now.

Don't know if this helps at all but looks like Henry Charles was born 1854. All his siblings are in the GRO.

David Marshall 55
Sarah Marshall 57
George Marshall 30 labourer Donnington, Berkshire
Henry Marshall 26 labourer Donnington, Berkshire
Sarah Amellia Marshall 5 Donnington, Berkshire

??? I can’t seem to find a birth entry in Newbury for
Sarah Amelia Marshall born c 1876 on FreeBMD or GRO indexes to check if her
mother’s maiden name is COPAS/DELL or something else

It appears that Sarah Amelia Marshall aged 5 years in 1881 census, a Sarah Marshall aged 15 years, is shown working as a Servant in 1891 census, and we think she most likely married a Thatcher at a later date.

Still trying to find out more information on her whereabouts.

MARSHALL marriage to a THATCHER, although no middle name on marriage entry for Sarah or
on the censuses but Sarah is noted as born in Donnington, Berkshire c1876

and it looks as if she had a son named Reginald  born c 1896 Newbury

and a dau born c1906

I have found marriage for Henry Charles Marshall  to Sarah Copas in 1874,
but it appears that Sarah died in 1875 aged 17 years.

Do you have Henry's m/c?

If you don't have m/c how certain are you that Henry married Sarah Copas?

Sep 1874  Newbury    2c   413
COPAS Sarah
Dell Jane
LEADER  James
Marshall Henry Charles

The reason I ask this question is the following

James & Sarah LEADER on 1881 census living in Berkshire,
Sarah’s bn c1847 Newbury they have child
Rose Elizabeth age 3

this appears to be her birth entry on GRO Indexes with mmn

Rose Elizabeth LEADER mmn COPAS
1877  S Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 02C  Page 224
Edited to add sister Mary born 1885 mmn COPAS

If Henry did marry Jane DELL this could possibly be her death entry

Dec 1875 Newbury Jane MARSHALL  age 35
