Morgans the Jewellers in Aberystwyth
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 10:32 GMT (UK) »
I've been asked by a friend to ask if I could find out when Morgans the Jewellers started in Aberystwyth
on the Corner of Great Dark Street and Calbreath Street now a Travel Agents. I know Genies on Rootschat have always come up trumps helping me I the past, so thought I'd give you a challenge.
Hoping someone can help.

I don't know if it's the right person/family,but I can find an 1884 newspaper ad for John Morgan, lapidary and jeweller, which says "Established 1840" and gives an address of
"Dresden House",Pier Street,Aberystwyth.

Perhaps somewhat confusingly, [in Welsh Newspapers Online] there is an ad in the Aberystwith Observer issue of 9 September 1866 for a John Morgan, Lapidary & Jeweller, of Mocho House 12 Pier Street - which states "Established 1836".

Mocho House is last mentioned [within WNO] in the same newspaper on 2 January 1875.

However, in the Observer issue of 15 August 1874, John Morgan (Established 1836) is advertising his business both at 12 Pier Street and at Dresden House, Marine Terrace.

Thanks everyone for your Time and Input, much appreciated.
I went to Aberystwyth Town Library and the Archivist there found a Trade Directory showing John Morgan in Pier Street from  1831 but the one I was after was in North Parade continuation of Gt Dark St.
and that was E J Morgan  Est 1855.

Morgans the Jewellers were on the corner of Great Darkgate Street and Chalybeate Street in Aberystwyth.   I have no knowledge of their time there, I just wanted to correct the spelling of the streets.   They were still there in the mid1960s - which was when I left Aberystwyth.   I believe that 'the corner of Great Darkgate Street' is now the corner of Owain Glyndwr Square.
