Appleton Parish Records

Dear Rootschatters

Does anyone know if it's possible to see the original copies of the Appleton Parish Records on Ancestry?  I've found plenty of other parishes thanks to the contributions from the Oxfordshire Family History Society but can't find Appleton.

Maybe it's because of Appleton's position as part of 'old' Berkshire?

Hi KN :)

In a word - yes.  The parishes that were in Berkshire until 1974 deposited their records at the Berkshire Record Office (BRO) in Reading.  Virtually nothing from that area is available online.

Oxfordshire Family History Society have transcripts for Appleton up to 1839 which you can buy on CD.  They've told me previously that they won't be doing any transcribing for the former North Berks parishes because they don't have the resources to travel to Reading.  I gather that Berks FHS aren't doing anything either because that area is no longer 'theirs'.

There used to be a film available from FamilySearch which had some more recent Appleton records.  I've seen it, and it's virtually useless being on old 9mm film and practically unreadable.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but all you can do is either go to Reading yourself or ask for a lookup on the RootsChat Berkshire board.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the confirmation Carol.

I have the CD but have really enjoyed being able to look at the originals of some other parishes. I have a particular marriage that I wanted to check against the original register in case it had been mistranscribed.  Hey ho, another day maybe.

Thanks for your help.

KN, I've just checked FindMyPast and they have the BFHS transcripts for Appleton as follows:-

Baptisms   1570-1858
Marriages  1710-1845
Burials      1570-1891

(Different date ranges for other parishes.)
