William Giles b 1815 - death cert 1859, please can you help?
« on: Monday 28 January 19 11:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I just wondered if anyone could help decipher what the word under dropsy says please and the box next to it, I can only make out 'The mark of Mary xxxx present at the death xxxxxx Street Southsea.
I am wondering what the xx's might be and also the secondary cause of death on the certificate as I wonder if it has anything to do with him being invalided out of the Royal Marines.

Many thanks in advance and best wishes,
Emma

Certified??    Is the next bit in that column the Dr's name?

The snip is really really really small isn't it!!   You are allowed much bigger posts on this board so we can see what we are trying to read!  ;D

Is the witness Mary Berry maybe?
Can't read the next line - much too small for my eyes.

Until 1874 entering the cause of death was not a legal requirement, but from 1874 a doctor's certificate was necessary before a death certificate could be issued. Between 1858 and 1874 the entry should indicate whether the cause had been 'certified' or 'not certified' by a medical practitioner.
In 1858  the General Medical Council came into existence

Hi Wiggy,

Thanks for taking a look, I had to shrink it to make it load as before it kept saying error file size too big!!! I will try another way as I am sure I am doing something silly!
