Re: Joseph Mitchell

When my ggg grandfather married at Hoo St. Werburgh, Kent in 1828 the wedding certificate shows that he is a widower.

He was born in Staines in 1793.

Would it be possible to see when he first married please?

FamilySearch has a few Joseph Mitchell marriages prob parish registers

30/8/1822      Susana Laler               St James Paddington
18/2/1824      Harriet White               Edmonton Middx
27/6/1824      Mary Spendley             St Dunston Stepney
12/2/1823      Margaret Evans            St Mathew Bethnal Green

If you can find deaths of any of these prior to 1828 then that might be a possibility

When my GGG grandfather married in 1828 at Hoo St. Werburgh, Kent I noticed on his marriage certificate he was a widower.

Is it possible to find out who his first wife was please?

“Copy of the Register of Baptism from the Parish         
of   Staines in the County of Middlesex . -                         
1793   July 25th.”

I was hoping there would be children with Elizabeth Rachel Mitchell in 1841 Census that may be from Josephs 1st Marriage but alas no;

All down as born in County

May I ask how you know that is Josephs Baptism 1793 as he does not appear on Census with Wife/Children?

The entry in the parish register has RN after Joseph' signature. I wonder if his service record would shed any light on where he was before 1828.

Thank you for your question.

Joseph Mitchell served for 50 years in the RN and his birth is shown with his RN attestation papers.

And yes, I have not been able to see any extra kids due to his previous marriage. Maybe his first wife died at child birth.
