Hello Bearkat,

I have nearly 40 years of RN records for Joseph Mitchell but there is still no hint as to his first wife. 99% of the time he was at sea for years at a time.

Do you know what ships he served on before 1828? Anything in the allotment records?

An interesting (RC) baptism in Portsea, a naval town

5 Mar 1826 Josephus MITCHELL son of Josephi MITCHELL and Elizae BOZO

BOZO seems to be a Serbian name  ???

He could have found a bride anywhere.

Thank you for your help so far.

Please see attached the ships Joseph Mitchell sailed on.

Many years ago I obtained a copy of all his RN career moves.

TNA sent me so many large photo copies of the original RN hand written pages.

He was certainly busy! - barely time to marry and father children

Gosh didn't he do well to rise from Ordinary Boy to become Master of the Temeraire!

Just looking at the allotment declarations: it looks like he was a married  man from 1 August 1813 while serving on the Dextrous/Dexterous. Nothing after that. His wife indentified only by an initial: T or F?

The first symbol is We for wife (as opposed to Mo for mother).

The allotment was payable at Plymouth.

Thank you for the clue ShaunJ.

He must have married very young....maybe 18 to 20 yo.

I had a quick look at marriages, Devon County.

There were only five weddings that came up on my search.
