Donegal towns that came under the Diocese of Derry
« on: Monday 28 January 19 22:51 GMT (UK) »
THis is a long shot but, I've finally broken through a 10yr old brick wall.
My ancestors probably lived in one of the Donegal towns that came under the Diocese of Derry.

I have located my family who moved to Scotland between 1853 and 1855.
They had at least 6 children born in Ireland.
Baptisms for 3 of these children who were not consecutive births, were all registered in St Columbs Longtower between 1841 to 1853.
The 1855 Scottish census data states that everyone in the family ( parents and children) were all born in Donegal.
In order to widen my search, can anyone tell me the approximate number of  Donegal towns involved that came under the Diocese of Derry.
Looking for a marriage that possibly took place between 1831 and 1841.

If you use the map and flick back and forth using Show Dioceses than Show Counties (top left of map)
you will be able to see which Donegal parishes are in the Derry Diocese
https://registers.nli.ie/

Click on a parish and than use the link to Irish Ancestors
Use the link on Irish Ancestors to get the place names in that parish, it links to the civil parishes first than clicking on each of those gives you towns and townlands.

They may not have married in the Derry Diocese

I think the name of the Diocese is  Diocese of Derry and Raphoe for Church of Ireland.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diocese_of_Derry_and_Raphoe

It is unusual as it has two Cathedrals:
The Cathedral Church of St Columb, Derry, Northern Ireland.
The Cathedral Church of St Eunan, Raphoe, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland.

If they were baptised at St Columbs Longtower (Londonderry) then I think that is one of the Cathedral churches of this diocese and is COI.

Info about Diocese of Derry
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Derry
Info about Diocese of Raphoe
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Raphoe

I think it will be the COI one as it is unusual as it straddles the border and includes Donegal and Derry parishes.

There are wonderful resources available for Co Donegal from this site:

http://donegalgenealogy.com/
Run by Lindel Buckley it is a treasure trove of info.

Thanks to you both for the response.
I knew that the maps were significant but, wasn't quite sure how to use them.

I should have said that I am already pretty familiar with St Columba's, Longtower.
I have other ancestors from Derry, and all of them were baptised and married there and I have visited on a number of occasions
It's RC.
St Columbas Cathedral is COI.

I'm certain that the family   I'm currently researching ( paternal) were from Donegal.
It would explain a lot about my DNA results and unknown matches.
My mum came from Donegal but there are dozens of Donegal based matches that don't seem to connect to her.
Chromosome mapping infers that they are paternal matches

The RC Catholic diocese of Derry has its boundaries in the link I sent and it has no cross over to Co Donegal that I can see.

RC diocese is Raphoe and covers Co Donegal.

It is the COI diocese that has the crossover Derry/Donegal.

I have also checked on the NLI map that Sinann linked to and I cannot see a cross over for the Derry RC Diocese into Co Donegal.

Am I missing something here?

Have you checked on Raphoe RC Diocese?

Cheers..learn some thing every day.

It does not seem to tie up with the diocese map from the same site which is puzzling.

You need to flick from one map to the other than you can see the Donegal Counties change to Derry Diocese colour. Try it while looking at the Inishowen Peninsula.
