"Belfast British Colonies Ireland" was he a Catholic and Irish Nationalist? He appears to be making a political point.

Thank you for your replies, I'm still of a mind to think it's Belfast, but can't see why it might have British Colonies.  I don't know if he was Catholic, but if I have the right people his son John my grt grt grandfather was married in the Parish Church in Bolton, which isn't Catholic.

I have Irish Catholic ancestors who came to England in the 1810/20s who were married in Catholic churches in London but whose children & further descendants went on to marry & have children baptised in Protestant churches.

Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.

From a history of Belfast. Until the late 16th century most of the land surrounding Belfast was still in the hands of the O'Neill clan.
At least he would be in the right place..

Hi, I think I've found him and his wife in the 1851 census. But look at Margaret Con who is a lodger, I think for her birthplace it says Van Diemen's Land - British Subject. A long way from Tasmania to Bolton Lancs.

That would mean she is British by virtue of her parents citizenship (namely her father) but she herself was not born in Britain.

Well it has possibly got you a bit further forward with the inclusion of Belfast than the ubiquitous 'Ireland' :)
