Netherwitton area of Northumberland
« on: Tuesday 29 January 19 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone know of a farm called Birkheads which was in the Netherwitton area of Northumberland. Ancestors of mine were baptised in St Giles Church, Netherwitton, in the 1750's and the abode is recorded as Birkheads.

Newcastle Courant, 1 Sep, 1753
To be LETT
and entered upon MAY-DAY next
A Farm, called BIRKHEADS, in the Parish of Hartburn, and County of Northumberland, within seven miles of Morpeth, containing about 160 Acres, pays neither Corn nor Hay Tythe, and has Lime and Coal upon the premises; enquire of Mr Winship of Ritton, in the said Parish, who will show the Premises and lett the same.

I think the owner of the Birkheads estate may have been Sir Lancelot Allgood of Nunwick Hall.

A further 1782 newspaper report refers to the contiguous estates of Coltpark, Ritton, Birkheads and Coldrife to be sold.

Many thanks for your answers. I had a feeling that it was close to Coldrife and Coldside (later family members lived / worked at both farms) but the map I was looking at did not put a name to the building that is Birkheads.

A map of Northumberland was published 1753 by Horsley and Cay. Cannot find a copy of the map on line - there's one in the British library and another at Wetherby library.

"An Index of Places mentioned in Mr.Horsley's map of Northumberland" published 1753 by George Mark includes -

Villages etc. - Birkheads
Parishes - Nether Witton
Wards - Morpeth W.
Letters - I.g (presumably a grid reference)
