Can't find my French ancestors in France (Chevreau)
« on: Wednesday 30 January 19 09:13 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather George Gustave Chevreau (abt 1871) was married to Marie Margueritte Dupuy (1875)  Both were apparently born in France but I can't find any trace of their existence in France on Ancestry. The earliest record of them that I've found is in the 1911 Census in UK. Can anyone help or does anyone know the best way of tracking down French records as I've not made any headway with this at all. Thanks!

Does it not say on the census return their place(s) of birth?
I mean not just France of course.
Hope you can move forward with this.
Viktoria.

Thanks for that. It seems that I'm not the only one who gets stuck at the same point. Such a shame there was no more detail about where they were born in France. I remember my Nan saying that there had been a nun in the family who ran away from the convent (In France) to get married to one of the Chevreau's. I don't know if it's true or if it might have been Marie Dupuy.

On the 1911 census it says he was a 'hotel timekeeper'.

It also says he'd been married for 18 years which means married around 1893 but haven't found a record for that in either England or France (yet).

I have no idea about what was or is a "hotel timekeeper", do you?
