Okay, plodding forward...
Hugh Bell McIntyre, 1854, appears to be the illegitimate son of Janet Bell and Lachlan McIntyre.
Janet subsequently married a George Murdoch, this from a death certificate for Hugh, in 1885.
Can't find a death for Janet Murdoch, to try and get her parents names. D.o.B. appears correct for a Janet Bell I have, born 1835, (1st cousin, 3xremoved). If this is right, that would make Hugh the GREAT grandson? of Archibald Bell, as in 1861 census.
So, any clues as to finding a death for Janet? I've had a hunt, but come up empty...if it's the 'right' Janet, it brings in a wheen* of relatives, Hugh married an Ann/Annie and had a daughter Catherine and a son Archibald...that name again  ::)
Janet also had at three more children, Mary Anderson Murdoch, Neil Alexander Murdoch, and Georgina Murdoch...

Iain, some suggetions from me re Janet Bell.

Why don't you check her marriage to George Murdoch. It is the one showing on 1 May 1867
Hutchesontown, Glasgow. The family in 1871:

George Murdoch 46 carter b. Glasgow
Janet B Murdoch 39
Niel Murdoch 3
Georgeania Murdoch 1

Address: 9 Commercial Road, Glasgow/ Hutchesontown

This is certainly her, and she shows as a widow when she married George Murdoch. The marriage from 1857 to a John McVicar is also hers. This is why her son Archibald McVicar is showing as living with his grandparents Archibald and Mary in 1871.

So this is her entry:

Janet Bell
b. 1 Dec 1828 GLASSARY ARGYLL
Father's Name Archibald Bell
Mother's Name Nanny Mctavish...http://www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nanny

I thought this might be Janet Bell/ McVicar/Murdoch's death:

Janet Bell/ Murdoch 1882 in Tradeston Glasgow. Aged 59.

Did Janet show as deceased on son's Hugh's death reg that you mentioned you had from 1885?

You have mentioned another Janet Bell born c. 1835 before. Who is she do you think?

Staying on Janet Bell, she and John MacVicar look to have had a daughter born not long after their 1857 marriage:

Jane MacVicar b. 16 December 1857

There is a death for an 11 yr old Jane MacVicar, with mother's maiden name of Bell. This death is registered in Hutchesontown, Glasgow in 1869. Hutchesontown is where Janet Bell married George Murdoch in 1867.

Just because I am getting confused with the 'wheen' of kids for Archibald and wife Mary, are these the ones you have? Birth dates are from the OPR index entries on Family Search (originals on SP as always):

Flora Anna b. 1 October 1820
Alexander b. 10 September 1822
John b. 22 September 1826
Janet and Hugh (twins) b. 1 December 1828

The 1841 census with some more children (you have all these but just helps for background here). Ages for children not quite correct but thereabouts!:

Archibald Bell 40 house carpenter
Mary Bell 40
Alexander Bell 15
John Bell 12
Jannet Bell 10
Hugh Bell 8
Peggy Bell 6
Duncan Bell 4
Lachlan Bell 2

Address: Knock Lochgair, Glassary
